Radio waves are better described as ripples in the lake from throwing an object in. The long wave might be a brick thrown in, while the shortwave would be a pebble. Imagine how the ripples from these two 'plonks' would interact. So visually you would observe what happens, and with some accurate measurement and sensitive measurement of the wave heights and time between the peaks, you could work out the answers you need.
I think you have got the wrong end of the stick somehow. While radio does have some weird and wonderful properties what I think you are asking is going to be answered by explanations you won't understand, because i suspect you may not have the physics in your head. You are thinking in lines (I think) - imagining a radio wave to be a long thin thing, that crosses another in the style of perhaps two fishing lines cast by two fisherman sitting around a lake?
